I am pleased to announce some new members to the County and District Teams following successful County Appointment Advisory Committee (AAC) interviews.

Richard Beeby – ACC Network

I would like to thank Matt Gilbert for an excellent job he did running Suffolk Scout Network which now has over 230 members. Matt will continue to lead on Duke of Edinburgh and Top Awards as well as running Needham Market as their GSL. Richard Beeby has been leading the Orwell Inferno Network that has grown to 57 members.  Richard has been involved in Scouts since joining cubs at 8 with the 31st/9th Ipswich and working his way through including Beaver leader. During that time, he’s also gained experience on a great number of adventures including 2011 World Scout Jamboree and completed his Explorer Belt in South Africa/Lesotho. He has also attended 5 International Jamborees as staff.

Richard will be working with Ollie Smith and the rest of the Programme Team.

Programme and Youth Shaped Team Recap: Ollie Smith County lead, Jo Cracknell ACC Cubs, Angela Humphrey ACC Scouts, Jamie Mortimer ACC Explorers, Sam Bolger County Scouter – Programme, Matt Gilbert – Top Awards.

Jenny Mullan – ACC Growth and Retention

In these troubling COVID-19 times, we realise that not only will growing new sections and groups be important, but even more so keeping young people and volunteers involved in Scouting. I am very pleased to announce that Jenny has agreed to take on this challenging and hopefully rewarding role to ensure that Suffolk continues to provide excellent Scouting to young people. Jenny will be reporting to Keith Gleen, Deputy County Commissioner – Growth and Inclusion who is heading up that team. I am sure that many of you came across Jenny when she was our County Commissioner until 2017. Jenny has throughout her Scouting career, always been driven by the belief that Scouting provides life-changing opportunities and that every young person should have the opportunity to enjoy it. In her years in Scouting she has seen first-hand the effect Scouting has on young people and adults. Young people are our future, not just in Scouting but in the wider world, and she is looking forward to the opportunity to work with and for them once more.

Steve Challis & Alison Barber – Deputy County Training Managers

How we develop and invest in our volunteers – young leaders and adult volunteers is changing and the onset of online webinars, online mandatory training as well as face-to-face training when we are permitted to again, provides opportunities to build our team across the County. Jenny Roe has been in role as County Training Manager for a number of months now, having taken over from Alife Foster-Green who’d done a fantastic job. Steve and Alison join our People team who already include Leigh Foster-Green as well as assistance from other volunteers who will be focusing on mandatory and wood badge training, people development and education, talent spotting and further special activity training for mountaineering, water and archery to name a few. Steve has been a County Training Advisor for 10 years, Local Training Manager since 2014 and has Scout and Explorer experience in Sudbury District. Alison was a County Training Advisor with over 5 years experience as well as leader experience for Beavers in Lowestoft District.

Paula Hollings – District Commissioner (Elect) - Stowmarket

I am delighted to announce that Paula has accepted the role of District Commissioner and will be taking on the role after Nickie Phillips has completed a few areas of work. Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to the hard work that Nickie has put into transforming Stowmarket District. The baton will soon be passed to Paula and we will let you know the exact date very soon. Many of you will know Paula as she has been a Deputy DC for the last 5 years helping Nickie as required. Paula has over 25 years Scouting experience and brings with her lots of ideas and enthusiasm.

IT Skills

We’re currently undertaking a project to uplift and transform Suffolk’s web & IT systems. We’re looking for people with skills in one or more of the following: Microsoft Office 365 or Software Development Skills - Either Full stack (Go/Java/PHP) or Front End (React/JS etc). If this sounds interesting, or even if you’re looking to gain experience on IT projects and would like to find out more, please contact Rob Gloess (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) for more details.

We’re also looking for a small number of GSLs for groups who would be willing to advise and pilot the systems developed by the project. If you/or your group would like to participate please contact Rob (as above).

Have a lovely summer holiday and watch out for more news very soon.
