WHAT a fantastic Autumn we have been having. I know lots of you have made the most of the warm weather for some extra camps. I think Autumn is my favorite term. There is so much you can do to make your programmes sparkle apart from Bonfire night and, of course, there is the run up to Christmas, a magical time for young and old.

I have been so pleased to see so many Leaders and young people wearing the “Lest WeForget” badge. The funds raised will go to build and maintain a Scouting memorial at the National Arboretum to remember members who have given service to Scouting and their community, especially those who have suffered through conflict. Please do remember that the badge should come off your uniform by the 31st December. You can always replace it with the Suffolk Contingent Jamboree badge. This badge will help to raise money for our young people going to Japan next year.

The Jamboree contingent will be hosting a fund raising Gala Dinner on the 22nd November. Tickets are £30 each or £150 for a table of six. This promises to be a very special evening. If you are interested please contact me for more information.

Compass has been launched and I know there have been problems. There are still a few more to be sorted but I must urge you to get all the data that has been asked for onto the system. Leaders’ details and that of your youngsters are critical. There have been lots of myths surrounding insurance cover, e.g. no cover if you are not wearing a Group scarf. You can be wearing what you like, but the truth is that if you or a young person is not registered, you will not be covered by the Scout Association so I hope you can see how important this is. I know some Districts have their own Compass Champions, but if you need help and do not have a Compass Champion,Carl Gloess will help. I have to say at this point that he and his team of Champions have done a magnicent job in preparing Suffolk for the change over to Compass.

Finally, it was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Paul Ruthven, County Executive member, Bury District Chairman and Bradfield Treasurer. Paul worked very hard on the Bradfield project and his knowledge and enthusiasm will be sadly missed.
