For the last six months during our cold winter, 20 Scouts, Explorers and Adults from 1st Grundisburgh, 1st Kesgrave and Fynn Valley Explorer Unit have been outside training for the 8th National Scout Archery Competition which took place last weekend in Hertfordshire. The weekend saw the largest number of competitors with over 380 Archers ranging from ages of 8 to adults well over 18. All archers entered into 3 forms of archery - Target, Field and Clout and entered as either Recurve Freestyle (using a sight) or Barebow (not using a sight)

The National Scout Archery competition is organised by Hampshire Scout Archery Club and has been approved by Scouting HQ as its National Competition. The Competition is open to all abilities and levels of Archery but you must be either a Scouting Member or have a direct relationship to a scouting members ie you're a parent of a Cub or Scout etc.

Although the weather was breezy at times, the Scouts, Explorers and Adults achieved some amazing scores and we came away with a grand total of 20 awards out of a possible 30! - these being either Cups or Shields and 33 Medals - these being 22 Golds, 10 Silver, 1 Bronze.  Rob Attwater gained the highest Target score for under 18 Barebow and received a top prize of a Genesis Compound Bow donated by Mathews USA Bow Manufactures and Clickers Archery of Norwich who were sponsoring the event.

Some particular achievements to mention from over the week-end:
  • Jack Nobbs won all 3 categories he entered into plus the Overall award
  • All our archers in the Recurve with categories of Under 11, Under 14, Under 18 and Over 18 came 1st in the Field Archery
  • Ollie Smith came 1st and set a new Clout record with 108 points which has never been achieved in the 8 years the competition has been running
  • Our teams came 1st and 2nd meaning we retained the Team Cup which we also won last year at the 7th National Scout Archery Competition.
